GreenWood Take One Giant Step in Community Recycling

GreenWood Family Park have revealed giant plans to kick start National Recycling Week (21 – 28 September 2020) with an aluminium recycling initiative for the local community to get behind.

An impressive 11.5ft (3.5m) tall metal structure, made by a local blacksmith, Gerallt Evans, from Tan Lan Metal Works, has been installed at the park entrance for the local community to deposit their washed and crushed aluminium drinks cans, accumulated from their homes which are naturally generating more waste than usual.

The big friendly giant can be fed an expected amount of 20,000 crushed drinks cans, all of which will be recycled by C. Davies Non-Ferrous Metals on Anglesey, and be back on a supermarket shelf as a new can in as little as 60 days.

Mark Thompson, GreenWood’s General Manager, said: “As a park we’re incredibly proud of our trail-blazing eco-credentials and our new recycling resident is a rather towering testament to our commitment in promoting healthier habits as humans.

“We wanted to mark the start of recycling week with a statement and hope the local community will join us with constant feeds of aluminium waste so we can collectively do our bit and save enough energy to power a television every hour of every day for over 7 years!”

Aluminium cans, which can be constantly recycled, are sometimes the cause of confusion in households, as many are still ending up in general waste and putting unnecessary pressure on landfill. GreenWood hopes that their towering new addition will help in some small way to illustrating and educating on the importance of recycling for the planet.

It is widely reported that if all the aluminium cans sold in the UK were recycled there would be around 14 million fewer dustbins emptied into landfill sites every year, where they stay for 500 years before oxidising. (Source: recycle-more.co.uk)

Deposits of washed and crushed aluminium drinks cans to GreenWood’s Jolly Giant will be welcomed, without requiring admission to the park, from Monday 21st September.
